Ankle sprain is a common injury that can occur in sports, work, and even in everyday life.
An Ankle sprain can be a difficult injury to recover from because it often causes swelling and inflammation around the ankle joint and surrounding areas. Ankle sprains are common injuries that happen to athletes, dancers, joggers, hikers, and even office workers who sit for long hours on their feet. Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments of the foot or ankle are stretched or torn.
Ankle sprains are often caused by athletes who are playing sports like badminton, basketball or soccer. It can also be caused by an awkward fall or slip-on ice. This injury typically occurs when one foot hits an object or when the foot is twisted during an awkward landing. Most ankle sprains heal on their own without surgery but it can take up to six weeks before you fully recover from them.
How can our physiotherapist help with ankle sprains?
Our physiotherapists are trained in different areas such as manual therapy, exercise therapy, electrotherapy and sports rehabilitation. Swelling, pain and inflammation are treated with modalities like ice and electrical stimulation. If swelling in the ankle is severe, our therapist may also apply massage strokes from the ankle toward the knee with your leg kept in an elevated position. This helps get the excess tissue fluid moving out of the ankle and back into circulation. They may issue a compression wrap and instruct you to wrap your ankle and lower limb and elevate your leg. Our physiotherapists may also apply specific hands-on treatment called joint mobilization to improve normal joint motion.
